History

The Fairey Swordfish entered world war two as an obsolescent torpedo bomber. Despite being completely outclassed and a dated design, it managed to achieve some very important victories. For example, at the battle of Taranto in 1940, the Swordfish sunk an Italian battleship, and heavily damaged two others. Also, in May of 1941, Swordfish operating from the HMS Ark Royal managed a critical hit on the rudder of the German battleship Bismark, which prevented it from escaping the pursuing Royal Navy flotilla, resulting in the loss of the ship. This success was in part caused by the low speed and altitude of the attacking aircraft, as the Bismarks AA guns could not aim low enough to engage them, and the gun's predictors did not have a low enough setting causing most of the flak to harmlessly explode in front of the aircraft.

The Swordfish was nicknamed the "stringbag" not, as is commonly believed, because of its appearance, but because of the variety of weapons and equipment that the aircraft could use. Crews likened the aircraft to a housewife's string shopping bag which was common at the time and, which due to its having no fixed shape, could adjust to hold any shape or number of packages. Like the shopping bag, the crews felt that the Swordfish could carry anything.

About This Model:

This model is painted in the scheme of one of the few surviving examples of the Swordfish still flying with the Royal Navy Historic Flight. It is painted in the pre-war colours of 810 Squadron embarked in Ark Royal, wearing the codes [A2A]. She has also been adopted by the City of Leeds and wears the city's coat of arms on her fuselage.
